Europe: French president, Emmanuel Macron, warns that Internet giants like Google and Facebook may be becoming too much to control, saying, “They have a very classical issue in a monopoly situation; they are huge players. At a point of time…[the US] government, your people, may say ‘Wake up. They are too big.’ Not just too big to fail, but too big to be governed. Which is brand new.”
Asia: Aman Tulayev, governor of Kemerovo in Siberia, has resigned in response to the shopping center fire that killed 64 people, including 41 children. His resignation was partially caused by widespread protests throughout Russia calling for the resignation of various regional officials based on alleged widespread corruption and incompetence.
Africa: Vicki Momberg becomes the first person in South Africa to be sent to jail for racism after yelling racial slurs at black police officers.
Oceania/Pacific Islands: Maui County, Hawaii, accused of violating Clean Water Act by pumping treated wastewater into injection wells at its Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility for more than 30 years.
