The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway
In my opinion, this should be required reading. Hemingway does a fantastic job of describing the spiritual journey of an old man without over-bearing the reader. Symbolism is used throughout the book as nothing is explicitly stated. Hemingway displays his stripped down approach so very well and manages to give us a fantastic journey about determination and purpose in less than two hundred pages.
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
In Cold Blood is one of my favorite books. It manages to have enough description to be entertaining and rich, yet not too much as to bore the reader. The fact that Capote manages to tell this story in such a way that you forget that it’s non-fiction really shows his masterful penmanship. This book should be a part of the required reading list. A masterpiece of storytelling.
